Reflection #71 – February 24

Ohhh it’s the ‘one-in-every-four-years day’!

I checked back in my posts to see what I was doing last time this day occurred and what a lovely coincidence it was to see my old Ref Sheet there!

Now that I am working on a new ref sheet, this was quite magical, oh how I would have loved to show here the finished piece but ahh well it has to wait a little longer.

February was filled with work given most of my modules in school demanded some finished states of progress of my projects. One after the other, I dealt with them, drawing concept sketches, wrote documents, edited videos and prepared presentations.

An overview of said projects are the visual design of classical playing cards, creating a small 2D shoot ’em up game and – and this I’m most excited about – a small animation film featuring my characters Tobias and Zavi :3

For the last project I have been testing out Procreate Dreams but as of now it is just too clunky and irresponsible to even animate a smaller animation scene. It certainly has a great foundation to consider it in the future but as things stand right now I will try to either do my animation work in CSP or in whatever my school can provide.

I wanna start posting some statuses of these projects here if I get to it but more on my plans later.

The Cheese snatching Harpy [Commission]

Early into the month, I got green light on a commission I have been going back and forth about for a while. The design process took a bit longer than I wanted just because of the stuff I had to do simultaneously. Once I had finished my last concept for school, I had all the time for myself to work it out and the progress really shined through. I guess I have just been waiting to get more productive on an illustration again, something I feel right now as well.

The rest of the image was thoroughly refined over the next 4 days, and I gave myself a strict deadline so work wouldn’t go into the upcoming heavy barrage of non-creative school heavy work.

It helped a lot and I am thankful for the feedback I got from my client to work out some rough edges that the final product really profits from. I definitely enjoyed the initial prompt and the creative freedom that was given me to execute it. Seldom did I feel as hungry for cheese as making this ^v^

Sadly, I couldn’t get to do more illustrations or finished concepts this month. I’ve been hinting at it before: currently I am very occupied with some school-related courses that dry out my free time. I’ve only been able to spend a little time working on a new ref sheet for my bird self, which is luckily going well. I don’t have to do much redesigning at all, just sort of apply what I have accumulated over the years in between and merge it to fit my island setting. Can hardly say when it’s finished though, I reckon there will be two versions this time that I’ll be releasing one after the other.

The next semester is on the rise and I fear it will be a very very full one with things to be done not even considering all the stuff on the side. I have applied for Dealer’s Den at Eurofurence this year and depending if I get accepted, I’ll be invested in making more merchandise too. Then I want to do key art for another con, but haven’t heard back from them in a while so this will be interesting.

Needless to say, it shouldn’t be boring. :3

Alright, I have one more week of mundane stuff to get behind me but first I need some good meal and an even better rest to recharge.

Oh at least I started doing weekly updates again after a long hiatus so I can keep you posted what’s going on.

I hope you will have a nice one. See me to the same thing again at the end of March!
