Reflection #20 – June 19

Hello everyone!

Yes, I’m trying out those Journal skins, there aren’t many out there that I like but I definitely like this one. So don’t hesitate to tell me what you think of it. Credit goes to Drake1 by the way, thanks buddy!

And while it is tempting to play around with everything, I really would remind myself that I am going to have an oral exam next week, so get your s*#! together and write this month’s reflection…

So how was my June? Pretty cool actually. It started off awesomely with some camping and visiting a Rammstein concert, though it started to feel somewhat cumbersome when the temperatures suddenly rose in Germany. Only recently, I measured 39°C outside, which I couldn’t believe. It’s hard to think about the hottest day last year but I certainly will remember this one. Just imagining the fact that it will only get hotter from now on…

Well, all the weather-related things aside, I had a relatively relaxed time which sadly didn’t result in that much creativity or motivation to draw. Artwise, it unfortunately was one of the less productive months, I am only happy about crafting two but only – in my eyes – extraordinary artworks, which I’ll be reflecting on in the following…

Artworks

Jasper – Crossing the Line

The one comeback of my characters had to be the trash-cat Jasper, with whom I don’t do much about despite having a lot of potential to result in an enticing story, I think. This piece originated from watching gang-documentaries on YT, where most of the modern real-life themed stuff of my artworks come from. I like this piece very much and I liked working on it just as well. As far as I can remember, there were no troublesome parts of it that would block my process, the only challenge was to actually decide on this environment and scrapping my attempts to form a perspectively-correct artwork. I guess drawing part-buildings/part-landscapes is a nice balance I found to not to get too enticed with perspective slavery and too wild roaming environments. I also managed to get some symbolism in there what happens unusually and even rarer consciously.

I attempted to work more on Jasper’s little universe, drawing him and his bud but those attempts failed in times of weakness and demotivation. Up to the next one…

Sephnet Character Sheet

I finally made a reptile character! And it wasn’t even me who decided on that aspect. It was you! A very nice example of how nice it can be to leave my hard decisions to public voting. I’ll do such a thing in the future again, I’m sure of it as it was a nice and fun experience. Even though, I’m afraid not everyone was happy with her design… that’s the downside of running with the majority of votes.

Anyway, drawing Sephnet was a challenge I set to myself. The scales are a new approach to realistic rendering that I achieved with help of: Yacrical, your feedback definitely helped me through the process, thanks a lot, mate! On the other side, it was also a welcome thing to do an Egyptian priestess, who – as it turned out – was a lot more interesting than I thought at first.

As some of your know, I like to keep a large entourage of very different characters for me to – when inspired – assign my ideas to my characters. Sephnet will stay in my mind as the more or less evil priestess with the plan of returning someone close from the dead.

Upcoming Stuff & Preplanning

As things go, I will be occupied by school for a last week, then I’ll be done, for real, entering the world of work or study…

But before I can break my head about my future, there will be one thing to do before that: I’ll have to move. I already have  a place though and Internet is assure, I will still be unavailable for an uncertain amount of time at an uncertain date, maybe not even next month? I don’t know? But I am almost sure I’ll have to good there. I’ll have the opportunity to separate my working and gaming place and I think this is the biggest plus I can offer for my artistic behaviour. Getting distracted and quickly demotivated to draw was a huge bummer in my past experience… I only hope it will work too.

As I am currently busy with my oral exam, I can’t actually tell you if I can get right into arting after that. I do have some projects though; one commission for a friend is in the planning, still several ideas in my mind, a lot of ideas coming from you guys, and the possibility of starting in my first art fight (maybe). I can only wait and see what comes…

Shoutout

As always, the place where I honour a close selection of amazing artist I found this month.

 neneda:

Luckily, this Serbian female joined our group AnthroLife where her deviations immediately caught my view and her gallery then convinced me to watch her. She has got a beautiful style to portray lush colours traditionally, so much even, that you wouldn’t take them as such on first glance. Her nature images and harmonic themes make for a vibrant and uplifting experience.

 Road-Abelgeym:

Apart from many other artists who inspired me to change my style and direction my artworks take, Road-Abelgeym is the very first one for me to say without a doubt: this is exactly what I want. She manages to portray characters with beautiful precision, feature small details and great contrast in overall dark tones, stunning visual designs in such a wide variety. I can say openly, the area of her skill and vision is where I aspire to be. Thank you!

I’ll see forward to giving you more updates at the end of July and hopefully seeing you back! ~Souvillaine
